Angelo van Dyk's Yo El Rey wines sit at the intersection of mischievousness and seriousness. Keeping it at this meeting point is his annual experiment with a new vineyard, varietal, or winemaking technique – the What Could Go Wrong? label
For the 2022 experiment, Angelo found a 20yo Muscat vineyard in the sandy soils of Breedekloof. The grapes were destemmed and fermented with skin-contact for 4 days before being pressed and moved into old oak to age for 10 months.
The end result is the antithesis of traditional Muscat that answers the What Could Go Wrong? question with a contemporary barely-orange orange wine of savoury, nutty depth and whispers of wildflower honey and litchi.
